LinkedIn About Section Bug: Why Your Profile Copy Looks Bad/Cramped/All On One Line
Short Answer: Fix the spacing in the LinkedIn mobile app.
What’s Happening
From what we’ve read, there are multiple versions of the LinkedIn about section editor. Sometimes you can get locked into a wonky one and your About section will turn into a giant chunk of text.
When this happens, LinkedIn is stripping out the formatting, which results in your text appearing as a giant block. There are no line breaks or spacing.
The frustrating part is there’s no rhyme or reason to when it happens. You might update your profile and it’s fine. Then you go back to make a small tweak and suddenly your entire About section is a mess. It can show up on desktop, in the mobile app, or both.
It USUALLY looks normal for you, but if you view your public profile (or have someone else view it for you), you might be affected.
Why This Matters for Outbound
Your LinkedIn profile is the first thing a prospect sees after they get your connection request or message. If your About section is an unreadable wall of text, it doesn’t matter how good your copy is… it’s not going to get read. First impressions matter, and a mangled profile undermines the credibility you’re trying to build.
A Workaround
Here’s what’s been working for us more often than not: make your profile edits through the LinkedIn mobile app instead of LinkedIn’s website. For whatever reason, formatting and adding spacing through the app seems to work more reliably than the browser version.
WARNING: If you fix it in the mobile app but then update it on the desktop, it will break again.
Word to the Wise
When you do try to fix it (or any time you’re updating your profile copy going forward) , keep a copy of your profile text saved somewhere else (a Google Doc, note on your phone, or whatever works) so you’re not rewriting from scratch if LinkedIn messes up your formatting again.
Bottom Line
This is a LinkedIn bug, not something you did wrong. But it’s up to you to catch it and fix it before a prospect sees a garbled mess where your well-crafted About section should be.
Check your profile, use the mobile app for edits when you can, and ALWAYS verify after saving.
